Matthew Krummel: Visions enumerated

چکیده

1212 JEM Vol. 206, No. 6, 2009 After earning his PhD with Jim Allison at the University of California, Berkeley, Max Krummel went down under to work with Ken Shortman and Bill Heath at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne. But it wasn’t until his second postdoc that Krummel cut his teeth on real-time microscopy while studying T cell signaling in Mark Davis’ laboratory at Stanford University (1). A year later he became a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, where his devotion to the approach has stuck. Krummel describes images as quantitative. As videos, they contain information in four dimensions including time. He has amended the technology to measure the speed of membrane receptor movement as antigen-presenting cells contact T lymphocytes (2), observed regulatory T cells inhibiting dendritic cell interactions (3), and visualized motor proteins that modulate T cell migration (4, 5). Although he doesn’t intend for his vibrantly colored videos to look like art flicks—they are simply stunning.

Immunological Synapses: Breaking Up May Be Good to Do

Activated T cells form stable immunological synapses with antigen-presenting cells whereas naïve T cells initially engage in more transient interactions. Sims et al. (2007) demonstrate that these transient interactions are due to the kinase PKCtheta, which serves to destabilize the synapse thereby permitting T cells to migrate elsewhere. They also show that re-establishment of a synapse involve...

Aspects of internet security - identity management and online child protection

This paper presents two possible visions of the future, one where the status quo of consumer Identity Management remains largely unaffected by the emerging technologies, the other where these new technologies gain popularity and wide-spread acceptance. More importantly, we give arguments that support both futures occurring. The object of this exercise is to try to enumerate those obstacles that...

Testing the organization of the immunological synapse.

Matthew Krummel is an associate professor of pathology at the University of California at San Francisco. His lab studies T cell dynamics, in particular the mechanisms for motility arrest, synapse formation, and establishment of cell polarity. For many years, his lab has been interested in novel methods for acquiring and analyzing real-time information about molecular and cellular dynamics in th...
